Today Claire and I woke up late, got to the train station late, and cruised our way into Wellington City. I'm not entirely sure where the whole day went, but we internet cafe-ed some bit, sent off our CVs to a few job agencies, etc, and then we went to Te Papa, the national museum of New Zealand.
We only stayed for about two hours, and at least half an hour was in the cafe, eating a beef and ale pie (yum!), but it was really interesting to see the immediate differences between Te Papa and the Auckland Museum. If you recall, I wasn't hugely impressed with the Auckland Museum. It felt very patchwork. Te Papa, on the other hand, is very much A National Museum. It's five floors of open architecture and cute lighting, complete with a ton of brightly colored walls and nicely laid out exhibits. The exhibits that I saw, anyway, the one on tapa paper masks and a jaunt through few a random ones, seemed very much in line with the idea of New Zealand as a country with a rich history of its own. This is a little bit terrible, but I really got the sense of New Zealand as a country and not just as an offshoot of the British Empire. There's a ton of history that I didn't know, and after walking through some of the exhibits I really wanted to learn more. Well done, Te Papa!
We stopped by the Wellington Library to see if we could get library cards (we can't until we get some sort of mail) and eyed all the movies and books and things that we wanted to get. I can't wait until I have access to the library. They are my favorite things! (Although Wellington Library does not have free wireless, and that actually irritates me. How is it a library without free internet? Raaaage!)
On the way back to the apartment, we stopped by the grocery store to buy some stuff and then we made dinner.
I've been too lazy to keep up with taking photos, but tonight's dinner would have been a really nice foodblog. Yesterday, we'd bought a whole chicken from the local Countdown, and I was a bit bemused by it. I feel like I've bought whole chickens before, but they've always been left to hang out in the fridge or freezer. Claire, however, cooks like breathing and prepared it in about two seconds, threw it in the oven, and an hour and a half later, a feast was prepared. I handled the rice, mushrooms, and caramelized onions , while she whipped up a delicious white sauce, and it was all good times. Mmmm. I'm getting hungry thinking about it.
Also, while that was going on, Derek and Lauren remain my favorite people ever. We'll be watching the rugby game on Saturday and I think Claire and I are going to invite them over for dinner next week.
Tomorrow: Hopefully get internet? Who knows?
